Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) are known to aggregate at or near the surface for often active and boisterous social interactions involving nudges, pushes, tail and flipper slaps, and intromissions (Everitt and Krogman 1979, Carroll and Smithhisler 1980). Such apparent mating aggregations, which are comprised of two to ten whales, also occur in northern and southern right whales
