The last 200 years have witnessed the destruction of the rich hardwood forests of the central portion of the United States. A detailed analysis of the process of deforestation in one representative county in the Midwest suggests that while few of the arboreal species have been eliminated, the relative abundance of the more common species has shifted significantly. The long-term effects of the conversion of closed woodland to cropland, the fragmentation of the forest, the creation of new habitats, i.e., fencerows and secondary woodlands, and the selective cutting and grazing of the remaining woodlots are discussed.
