The article focuses on the origin of modern environmental activism in Puetro Rico in the 1960s. The author remarks that today modern environmentalism is an established fact around the world, but it is a recent phenomenon. The article explores the early environmental politics in Puerto Rico and traces the evolution of the environmental movement that emerged up to the mid-1970s, making the connection with present activism. The discussion focuses on the forces and which contributed to shape the emergence, development and character of this movement, how the Puerto Rican government confronted the challenge of environmental activism, and the political significance of Puerto Rican environmentalism. The first expression of modern environmentalism on the island can be traced to the work of the noted novelist Enrique Laguerre. His journalistic work on the radio and in newspapers during the early 1950s and 1960s, consistently criticizing the government's development strategy and its consequences for the environment and natural resources, generated heated controversy.
