In tests on coagulase-positive strains of staphylo-cocci from various sources, the incidence of A, B, and AB enterotoxins in 190 strains isolated from raw milk was 3.2, 1.0 and 0% respectively, while no enterotoxins were found in 50 strains from mastitic cows. It is concluded that the coagulase test is a poor criterion of A and B enterotoxigenicity. 6 of 8 serologically enterotoxigenic strains isolated from raw milk were type A and 2 type B. Substances differing from the A and B enterotoxins and producing an emetic response in cats were found in cultures of 40 out of 51 coagulase-positive strains isolated from raw milk. Enterotoxigenicity of the A and B types is not associated with a specific phage pattern; neither A nor B enterotoxin was produced by 55 phage group IV strains from raw milk or 50 from mastitic cows.
