Endopeptidases of both plant and animal sources were found to be a uniquely effective chemical stimulus for the production of pruritus in man. Introduced into the epidermis by a spicule technique they elicit a severe sustained pruritis in the absence of any visible cutaneous change. It is postulated that the release of activation of proteinases in the epidermis plays a significant role in itching.
