The history of medicine is littered with popular terms for physicians: sawbones, originating from a procedure; shrink, from a process; and leech, from a tool. The term which has most interested me recently and which is the launch for my discussion today is" leech." This is a term that goes back to the 19th century, when leeches were as commonly associated with physicians as stethoscopes (or HMOs) today. When you and I were in medical school, if leech was mentioned at all, it was in a nanosecond-long discussion of how far we have come from the bad old days when problem and solution, cause and effect, illness and cure were so little understood. Leecheswere right down there with exorcising demons, garlic necklaces, and silver stakes through the heart.
