Compared reaction time (RT) data from 24 nonmedicated, mildly hypertensive and 28 age-matched normotensive men to examine potential changes associated with hypertension for the separate processing components of memory-search performance. Blood pressure was measured for all Ss, and Ss participated in an RT test in which they decided whether or not a visually presented probe digit was a member of a set of digits held in memory. Results indicate that the rate of search through short-term memory was slower for hypertensives than for normotensives, whereas the duration of encoding and response processes was equivalent for the 2 groups. This hypertension-related slowing of memory comparison was independent of Ss' error rates and education levels.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
