In 1951, a paper by Grobner [2], dealing with a criterion for the irreducibility of an ideal, contained the following interesting and striking result f. In a regular local ring, any ideal which can be generated by a system of parameters is irreducible, that is to say it cannot be represented as the intersection of two strictly larger ideals. The present paper is mainly concerned with a more general theorem (Theorem 3) of the same kind
