Poliovirus particles of type 1 were agglutinated by type-specific antisera and the aggregates were studied electron microscopically as to their composition after embedding in phosphotungstic acid. Using monospecific antisera to either the N or H antigens it was found that anti-N caused agglutination of essentially "complete" particles, whereas anti-H produced aggregates of obviously defective particles. Simultaneous addition of anti-N and anti-H, as contained in a rabbit serum, to the virus preparation, resulted in formation of mixed aggregates, whereas successive addition of monospecific antisera separated the antigenic components into essentially specific aggregates. Possible reasons for the differences observed in simultaneous and successive addition of anti-N and anti-H have been discussed.
