A ssistant Secretary of Education Finn claims that the public regards much of educational research with skepticism, associating it with either educational faddism or "pointy-headed intellectualism." The public holds these perceptions because, according to Dr. Finn, education research hasn't "produced enough findings that Americans can use or even see the use of," "has not fulfilled its role in the effort to improve our schools" and, he implies, has not provided people with "reliable and effective methods of instruction for their children" (p. 5). By reporting and not refuting public perceptions, is the Assistant Secretary agreeing with them? We think so.
