she was seised of the properties; a jury was summoned to view them and William appeared in chancery on 23 November 1564 to plead his cause. The following February young William Plump ton came of age, received livery of the lands inherited by him in right of his grandmother, and lost no time in reviving his claim." A fourth, and finally successful, attempt at arbitration followed on 20 October, when two justices of the court of common pleas, Richard Weston and John Walsh, awarded the manors of Babthorpe and Osgodby, with the lands in Hemingborough to William Babthorpe, and the manor of Waterton, with the other lands to which he was entitled under the terms of the marriage contract of 1496 to William Plumpton. A decree of the court of wards and liveries was awarded to Babthorpe in the Michaelmas term 1567 after Sir Nicholas Bacon, keeper of the great seal, had appeared before the justices of the bench and accepted his plea. The traverse was thereupon declared justified.
