Reviews the book, Fool's Paradise: The Unreal World of Pop Psychology by Stewart Justman (see record 2005-13731-000). This book deals with the currently fashionable self-actualization. Justman is particularly critical of the kind of pop psychology promoted by successful media gurus such as Dr. Phill (Phill McGraw), whose popular television show is regularly watched by many millions all over the world. Justman exposes successfully the shallowness of pop psychology theory, if it may be called so, and also the lack of originality and literary value of such writings, which only repeat the message of other authors over and over again. Justman has written a book from the standpoint of literary theory and analysis rather than empirical psychology. Hence, he does not raise some very interesting questions, such as what actually happens to people who try to follow the self-actualization doctrine. Justman's book effectively exposes the shallowness of pop psychology doctrines from a literary and cultural perspective, and it is of great value for that reason.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
