by Jacob sturm§ l.]: ntroduction.'l'he purpose of this paper is to give a criterion for deciding when two modular forms with algebraic integer coefficients are congruent modulo a prime\. We then use a formula of Asai [1] to refine our resuLt; in the case where the modular forms are newforms (i. e. primitive forms) of square free level. In the last section we give some examples.
