Environmental plutonium is often publicized as an ominous danger resulting in public fear, dread, or alarm. This volume compiles the latest research and data on the distribution, mobility and fate of plutonium in the environment, providing a technical basis to counter misunderstandings of the element. The first volume of a new series Plutonium in the Environment provides selected, peer-reviewed papers from the Second Invited International Symposium on Plutonium in the Environment, held in Osaka, Japan, in November 1999.The proceedings are organized under four topical areas that address the broad subject of environmental plutonium: Origins and Occurrence (3 papers); Analytical Methods (3 papers); Chemical Speciation and Distribution in the Environment (8 papers); and Case Studies (11 papers). The symposium papers are supplemented with a foreword, an editor’s preface, a conference summary, an index of authors, and a subject index. The use of “international” in the conference title is supported by the presence of authors from institutions in 17 countries.“Global” could be used to describe the environmental occurrences discussed in the case studies, where plutonium distributions in arctic waters and ice, in tropical islands and oceans, and in most continents in between are reported.
