Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a gram-negative organism which is a suspected etiologic agent in juvenile periodontitis. Preliminary purification and characterization of this lymphocyte suppressive activity indicate that it has a molecular weight of 50,000, is heat labile, and trypsin sensitive. Furthermore, it appears to be a distinct moiety from other biological activities observed in A. actinomycetemcomitans sonicates. These results demonstrate that sonic extracts prepared from A. actinomycetemcomitans are capable of suppressing both B and T cell functions which may be mediated through a common mechanism. ie. the activation of T suppressor cells. Although the immunologic mechanism (s) involved in periodontal disease is not clearly defined.
