Old house borer larvae, Hylotrupes bajulus, were placed into pieces of red oak (Quercus spp.) at 70 percent moisture content (MC), yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) at 7 percent MC, and southern yellow pine (Pinus spp.) at MCs of 12 percent or 23 percent; the wood pieces were inserted in a flexible container to which vacuum (20 mm Hg at 20°C) was applied. Larval mortality was the result of loss of larva body water, which resulted in whole-body dehydration. Larvae were found dead at body weight losses ranging from 25 to 60 percent. Larvae were killed in less than 96 hours in the pieces of yellow-poplar and pine wood. Lethal vacuum time was related to wood MC and larval weight. In this study, the lower the wood MC, the fewer hours required for larval mortality.
