The aim of this study was to see whether song rate provides reliable information about a male's energetic condition in Ipswich sparrows,Passerculus sandwichensis princeps. Singing and foraging were mutually exclusive and, in the morning (when males sang most), singers foraged less than non-singers. Morning was a profitable time to feed, so that singing in the morning entailed a cost. This cost was reflected in the effect of energetic stress on song rate; after cold nights, males weighed less and sang less. Providing extra food both increased song rate and decreased foraging. Therefore, song rate was energy-limited, and so provided reliable information about a male's energetic condition. However, this reliability was reduced in warmer weather, such as at midday and in midsummer, and in an unusually mild year.
