Four fault scarps that formed during the earthquakes of October 2, 1915, are located in north-central Nevada, 150 mi (240 km) northeast of Reno, and 30 to 55 mi (48 to 88 km) south of Winnemucca (Fig. 1). A site along the largest of the four scarps, the Pearce scarp, at Golconda Canyon on the west flank of the Tobin Range (Sec. 5, T28N, R. 39E, Mt. Tobin 15-minute Quadrangle) is easily reached by driving south about 45 mi (72 km) from Winnemucca along the Grass Valley-Pleasant Valley road, which is paved for about 7 mi (11.2 km) after which it is graded gravel. At the Golconda Canyon road, go east 1.5 mi (2.4 km) to the fault scarp at the range front. The Pearce scarp is also clearly visible from the Pleasant Valley road for about 15 mi (24 km) and excellent photo sites abound. Afternoon lighting emphasizes the scarp especially well. The Sou Hills scarp (3–6 ft)(l-2 m) high, can be seen in the distance to the south from near the junction of the Pleasant Valley-Dixie Valley roads.
