In addition to the standard genetic and Lamarckian hypotheses to explain the evolution of adaptive callosities, a 3d possibility is suggested that during the course of evolution the environmental stimulus has been superseded by an internal genetical factor. The formation of a callosity through external stimulation must be under genetic control. Developmental reactions as they occur in organisms submitted to natural selection are in general canalized for one end result. The constancy of the wildtype must be taken as evidence of the buffering of the genotype against minor variations not only in the environment but also in its genetic make-up. It is possible that an adaptive response can be fixed without waiting for the occurrence of a mutation which, in the original genetic background. mimics the response well enough to enjoy selective advantage.
