Reviews discoveries during the past 100 yr. of studying the effect of electrical stimulation of the brain. Included are (a) stereotypic behavior or sensation elicited through stimulation of the neocortex and the brainstem,(b) motivational behavior from stimulation of the limbic system,(c) nonmotivational learning through stimulation of the motor or sensory neocortex,(d) central stimulation as a signal for the performance of learned acts,(e) generalization and discrimination,(f) pathways by which the centrally applied CS is effective, and (g) augmentation of or interference with learned behavior.
