July 1999 mation is known regarding the neurotransmitters and neuromodulators of the reflex. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (αCGRP) is a 37 amino acid peptide that is thought to be released primarily from sensory neurons. 9 αCGRP shows minimal variability between animals10 and may be detected immunohistochemically in both the central and peripheral mammalian nervous systems as well as in the mucosa and submucosa of the mammalian larynx. 11-13 The ubiquitous peptide serves a number of roles and may function as a neurotransmitter, a neuromodulator, a local hormone, and even as a neurotrophic factor. 9 Because the peptide is so often found colocalized with established neurotransmitters, it is thought to function primarily as a neuromodulator. 14 This study investigates the role of αCGRP in the LCR by comparing the reflex response in piglets before and after systemic administration of αCGRP 8-37, a competitive antagonist of αCGRP.
