5. These results suggest that cells within the nucleus pontis oralis are directly involved in generating hippocampal synchronization (0) and that the fibers from these B-generating RPO cells ascend to the diencephalon along the three synchronizing routes that were identified (MLF, MFB, and CTT). Further, these results indicate that cells of the median raphe nucleus are involved in producing hippocampal desynchronization and that the fibers from MR cells ascend to the diencephalon along the one desynchronizing route that was described. 6. In previous studies (1, 36) it was suggested that hippocampal synchronizing fibers arising from the brain stem ascend along the midline in the dorsal longitudinal fasciculus of Schutz (DLF) and that desynchronizing fibers ascend through the MFB. In contrast to this, we propose that the synchronizing system ascending along the midline to the diencephalon is not the DLF but the MLF and that the MFB is the source of hippocampal synchronizing as well as desynchronizing fibers.
