CAUSES OF DEATH OF THE AGING POPULATION IN JAPAN Recently, according to reports from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare Japan (http://www. mhlw.go.jp/), the increasing elderly population aged 65 years and older should be a focus for national concern. For people less than 20 years of age, accidents are the most common cause of death; for those aged between 20 and 40 years, suicide is the most common cause of death; however, for those aged 65 years and older, cancer, pneumonia, brain hemorrhage, and heart diseases are the leading causes of death. Recently, suicides within the elderly population have become medical and social problems. The longevity of the Japanese population is due to both a low mortality of newborns and good life expectancy for aged populations. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned in April 2005 that the death rate of elderly patients with dementia who were treated with atypical antipsychotic agents was approximately 1.6–1.7-fold that of patients treated with placebo. Although the causes of death varied, most seemed to be either heart related (e.g. heart failure or sudden death) or infections (pneumonia).
