The earliest implement, other than the hand, used for weed control may have been a stick for grubbing out unwantedplants in crops, while some form of whisk may have been used to remove troublesome insects. During the classical ancient Mediterranean period there were several men whose writings on agricultural subjects have survived to modern times. Of these the Greeks Demo-
