( ) At operation in a random selection of mature male rats, 50 % Micropaque suspension (Damancy & Co Ltd) was introduced through the rete testis into the vasa efferentia both on the right and left sides. On the right side, the flow of the medium was advanced until a quantity was seen to enter the initial segment. The terminal efferential tubule was then transected between ligatures and the initial segment isolated from the distal remnant of the proximal duct system. On the left side, the flow of the medium was not advanced beyond the terminal efferential tubule. (2) In thirty-four out of forty-three animals sacrificed at periods varying from 4 hr to 15 days after operation, the rates of flow as between the operated and the control sides were practically identical. (3) Isolation of the initial segment of the rat epididymis from the vasa efferentia and from the testis does not prevent the movement of its contents towards the caput flexure. The medium is then transported through the ductus epididymidis at a rate of flow not significantly different from that which obtains when free communication with the efferential system and with the testis still exists. (4) Transport through the initial segment depends essentially if not entirely on muscular peristalsis. (5) The results recorded are additional to previous findings. The propulsive forces existent in the testis, the vasa efferentia and the initial segment during the transport of 50 % Micropaque suspension are mechanically independent of one another. (6) It is suggested that the variations in sperm density which exist as between portions of the excurrent duct system of the rat testis do not necessarily reflect altera¬ tions in the rates of transport of testicular products ; they may well be associated with the complicated fluid exchanges which occur throughout.
