Two millimeter Ni–Ta bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were realized over a composition range of 59–62at.% Ni. According to the cluster-plus-glue-atom model, this composition range can be expressed by a cluster formula [MNi6Ta6]Ni3, where M ranges from Ni to Nb. These alloys show a glass transition temperature Tgof about 993K, the highest among known BMG alloys. They also have a wide undercooled liquid region ΔTx=Tx−Tgexceeding 50K. These BMGs exhibit ultrahigh strengths of about 3.5GPa.
