The sheetlike polymeric matrix (Fig. 3) that exists at many cell–cell interfaces continues to fascinate many, despite the indices that specific research in the area of basement membranes appears to be on a gradual decline (Fig. 1). Ironically, the former reductionistic approaches to the study of basement membrane biology of the 1980s, which ultimately gained the critical recognition of this matrix and its constituent molecules in the general scientific community, has been a doubleedged sword to those in the field. There is no doubt that our knowledge of the molecular structure and organization of the basement membrane has been significantly enhanced by seminal research studies of 1980s and 1990s. At the same time, we may have failed to convey to those outside of our field the importance of the basic concepts about basement membrane biology first put forth by those investigators in the 1960s and 1970s—that the bioactivity of this polymeric sheet in
