Bis (trimethylphosphine)-substituted, cationic? j2-alkyne complexes of tungsten (7; 5-C5H5)[P (CH3) 3] 2W-(tj2-RC= COR')[BF4](R= CH3, C6H4CH3-4; R'= CH3, C2H5) were prepared by treatment of the corre-sponding mixed carbonyl-trimethylphosphine alkyne complexes with trimethylphosphine. The substitution is accompaniedby an unexpected color change from yellow to violet which can be explained on the basis of extended Hückel MO calculations. The structures of the new compounds were determined by spectroscopy and, in the case of the? j2-metlioxy (4-methylphenyl) ethyne complex 2b, additionally by X-ray analysis.
