Producing a second edition of a book is nothing unusual. However, the way Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin (1727-1817) prepared the second edition of his Selectarum Stirpium Amerkanarum Historia, a basic work for the flora of the Caribbean region first printed in Vienna in 1 763, was most unconventional. This paper deals only with the extremely rare, amended version published about seventeen years after the first edition came out, two fine copies of which have very recently appeared on the London art market (Anon., 1994a & b; 1997) and raised exceptional interest. No attempt is made to discuss the third edition of Jacquin's work (Anon., 1788) which was published anonymously in 1788 in Mannheim and is a totally different work. Since an extensive literature exists on Jacquin, a key figure in botany in the second half of the eighteenth century, and on the first edition of the Selectarum Stirpium Amerkanarum Historia recently summarized (Stafleu, 1970; 1980), the background of this famous work is only briefly outlined. At the same time this contribution supplements a note by Frederick Gilbert Wiltshear (1882-1917), Librarian at the Department of Botany, British Museum (Natural History), who more than eighty years ago had studied a few copies of this rarissimum (Wiltshear, 1913). Special emphasis is placed on the titlepages of the various copies studied by the author, which may be regarded as exceptionally accomplished and ranging among the most spectacular flower pieces ever painted on paper; few of these have been published, and none of them was ever properly analyzed. Hopefully this paper will stimulate interest in Jacquin's most exquisite work and the illustrators who have contributed to it.
