Analyzed data from a large study of hypertensive patients to examine the generality of propranolol's effect on a conservative bias in decision making found by J. Corwin et al (see PA, Vol 77: 26278; eg, Ss tend to say no when uncertain in number recognition). 312 18–59 yr old mild diastolic blood pressure hypertensives received up to 5 80 mg tablets/day (propranolol or placebo) and were given a battery of tests before medication and after 3 mo and 1 yr on medication. On a recognition test, Ss receiving more than 80 mg propranolol at 3 mo tended to become more cautious; these changes were not seen at 12 mo. On a continuous performance test, Ss receiving propranolol had significant slowing of mean reaction time (RT) at both 3 and 12 mo.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
