The trend of handheld devices in recent years has been to add sophisticated functions for multimedia processing. In order to achieve such elegance, application processors of mobile phones have commonly followed JIT type Java CPU. This has benefited designers, since it is the hardware emulator of Java function implemented in flash ROM. However, using such additional memory has been crucial for buttery life, because the exhausting power consumption of memory has been well known as one of the most critical issues for multimedia mobile processors. Actually, adherence to JIT type CPU has made two sacrifices. The one has been suppressing clock speed to the level of hundred MHz, and the other has been modifying memory organization by introducing mobile RAM or pseudo SRAM.In order to achieve a fundamental solution for high performance mobile computing, we have exploited a processor core named gollira that refers in part to an interpreter type Java CPU. This is a different type Java CPU from the JIT type that executes Java bytecodes directly in hardware without JVM. In addition to this, we have adopted favorable processor techniques for possibly improving the performance, specifications, and usefulness of multimedia mobile processors.
