This book is designed for the use of teachers and others who wish to gain an insight into "key ideas of the modern mathematics now being presented to pupils in elementary and secondary schools." These key ideas are, however, here limited to the principles for the arithmetical operations on cardinal numbers, then rationals, decimals and finally the integers, starting from sets. Most of the work is clearly developed and presented, but it becomes less complete towards the end, in its treatment of multiplication of decimals and of the integers. I t is attractively printed in two colours, and contains a useful glossary, which, however, besides containing several (admittedly elementary) mathematical terms outside the scope of the book, illustrates the impossibility of always giving adequate short definitions. The entries under "addition" and "multiplication," for example, are identical, except tha t in further comment the words "addends" and "sum" in the first are replaced by "factors" and "product" in the second.
