The tensile characteristics for 17-4PH steel obtained from various heating conditions were evaluated in terms of strength and mechanical behavior. The tensile tests were conducted under both elevated temperature condition with material testing machine equipped with high temperature furnace and rapid heating condition with infrared heating system. The rapid heating test results were compared with tensile test at elevated temperature with respect to the yield strength to investigate the influence of heating rate. It is found that yield and rupture temperatures increase with increasing heating rate, but decrease with increasing pre-loading. The heating rate-yield temperature parameters were presented to take into account the heating rate effect and to describe yield stress from master curves of these parameters. The results and methodology from this study can be used for margin of safety data for supersonic vehicle structures when subjected to high heating rate.
