The effects of age on a number of commonly used neuropsychological measures of learning and memory for 2 groups of healthy, active older adults were studied. Two groups of 15 subjects between the ages of 50-62 yr and 67-86 yr were given portions of the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery, the Wechsler Memory Scale and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. Age had a pronounced effect on most of the measures. The younger of the 2 groups of subjects performed significantly better than the older group of subjects on 10 of the 18 neuropsychological measures used. The nature and implications of these results for clinical assessment are discussed.
