Serial sections and whole mount preps. were made of 300 blastodiscs from ovarian and oviducal eggs. Photographs were obtained of the various stages of development including cleavage stages up to the 256-cell stage. The walls of the germinal vesicle or nucleus begins to break down approximately 24 hrs. prior to the time of ovulation. The germinal vesicle has completely broken down before the time of ovulation. The first polar body is extruded and the spindle for the second polar body formed while the egg is still in the ovary, just prior to the time of ovulation. The spermatozoa penetrate the vitelline membrane within 15 mins. after ovulation and while the egg is in the infundibulum. The 2d polar body is extruded after the entrance of the sperm and while the egg is transversing the albumen-secreting portion of the oviduct. The first cleavage furrow normally makes its appearance as the egg is entering the isthmus portion of the oviduct, or approx. 5 hrs. after the laying of the preceding egg. The 4- and 8-cell stages also occur in the isthmus.
