A fluorescent nucleoside, Y, was first found in Saccharomyces cerevisiae tRNAPhe**(RajBhan dary et al.(1)). Similar fluorescent materials were also found in tRNA'sPhe from wheat germ (Yw)(2), rat liver (3), bovine liver (4), and recently from rabbit liver (5). The nucleosides Y and Yw are located adjacent to the 3• L-end-of the anticodon(1, 2), and are involved in the recognition of the phenylalanine codons. The structure of the Y-base was proposed by Nakanishi, et al.(6) and established by synthesis (7). They also determined the structure of the Y-like base in bovine liver tRNAPhe(8). Sequence similarity between tRNA'sPhe from Torulopsis utilis and S. cerevisiae was shown previously(9). Actually, fluorescent Y-like base has been extracted from a partially purified preparation of T. utilis tRNAPhe. As this base is somewhat different from Y-base as regards paper chromatographic behavior and ultraviolet absorption spectra, we have named it Yt-base(t= Torulopsis). The structure of this base has been determined(10)(see Fig. 4). While the Y-and Yw-bases are present at the position next to the 3• L-end of the an ticodon, the location of the Yt-base is so far unknown.
