In 1903, just a year after the foundation of New Phytologist, a crucially important fossil plant was described that helped to bridge the large evolutionary gap between living ferns and seed plants. Oliver & Scott (1903, 1905) assisted by Marie Stopes, then a palaeobotanical student, discovered that seeds known from the Carboniferous period by the name of Lagenostoma lomaxi were attached to fern-like foliage called Lyginodendron oldhamium (later renamed Lyginopteris oldhamia; Zimmerman, 1958)(Fig. 1). Oliver & Scott (1905) named this extinct group of plants the pteridosperms (Fig. 1), commonly called the seed ferns, and subsequently the characteristics of this group have been instrumental for building and testing hypotheses about the origin and evolution of the seed, one of the most important innovations of land plants. News of the discovery of the pteridosperms was significant enough to warrant being highlighted to the readers of New Phytologist by the journal’s founder Sir Arthur Tansley, who ended his 1903 letter by stating ‘It is with even greater interest that we now await the discovery of more primitive types of seeds’(Tansley, 1903).
