The asymmetry of the equatorial ionospheric anomaly (EIA) has been investigated using f 0 F 2 and h p F 2 /h'F 2 results obtained at a chain of East Asian ionosonde stations (at longitude ∼120 o E) during the SUNDIAL-87 campaign, 29 May-7 June 1987. Predominant daily features were (1) a more rapid build-up of the southern (winter) EIA crest in the morning and (2) more rapid decay of this same crest, starting in the mid-afternoon, than the northern crest. These observations have been explained by the effect of the daytime summer-winter hemisphere directed winds. In general, there was good agreement between International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) predictions and the observed results near the EIA crests at Hong Kong and Bandung. Day-to-day variability of the EIA crest is attributed to (1) variability in the daytime, equatorial, eastward electric field which affects the EIA diffusion process and both crests and (2) localised diffusion down magnetic field lines in the early morning or after sunset which may affect only one crest
