Samples of eight soil horizons from Al-rich mountain soils under cold and wet climates and with various contents of exchangeable and amorphous Al and allophanic products, and one horizon (Eutrochrept) from a lower atitude, under a favourable climate and with a low content of amorphous constituents, were incubated in the laboratory at 20°C and 80% of field capacity, thus removing climatic limitations to organic carbon mineralization. Enrichments were made with distilled water, a synthetic Al-14C-citric acid complex, free14C-citric acid, or14C-glucose with either ammonium sulphate or ammonium phosphate. The rates of mineralization of organic carbon observed in the laboratory indicated that climate is the principal factor responsible for organic matter accumulation in the holorganic layers of mountain soils in cold topographic situations. Amorphous Al limits mineralization in organo-mineral horizons, probably by forming organic-Al complexes. Available P deficiency is an important limiting factor in the Al-rich Andosols.
