HeLa [human cervical cancer] and CHO [Chinese hamster ovary] cells were exposed for 1-15 min to 1 MHz ultrasound at intensities up to 30 W/cm2. The threshold for cell lysis was approximately 1 W/cm2, with the maximum effect at 10 W/cm2. Among the intact cells there was a decreased viability as determined both by trypan blue exclusion and by colony-forming ability; the intensity vs. response curve was similar to that for cell lysis. A decrease in proliferation rate and an increased incidence of giant cells occur for the remaining intact and viable cells.
