INTRODUCTION Over a period of 40 years (1949 to 1989) more than 400 nuclear explosions were carried out at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site (STS) which is located in the north-eastern part of the Kazakh Republic. According to the Kazakh Scientific Institute for Radiation Medicine and Ecology, 26 surface and 92 atmospheric nuclear explosions were carried out from August 1949 to December 1962 (1). After 1962, the vast majority of nuclear tests were underground.
