The major cross-links of mature bovine Descemet's membrane have been compared with those of the anterior lens capsule. Both basement membranes contained hydroxylysinonorleucine but Descemet's membrane also contained two components with the chromatographic properties of desmosine and isodesmosine. These cross-links were concentrated in a highly insoluble fraction of the basement membrane that did not resemble elastin. The presence of these stable cross-links may explain some of the functional properties of Descemet's membrane.
