Sodium-3-indolyIglycolate, a weak auxin, has been crystallized and indentified from an incubation mixture containing only indole and sodium glyoxylate. A second more active product, formed in the presence of excess indole, has been characterized as 3, 3'-diindolylacetic acid, on the basis of elemental analysis, determination of molecular and equivalent weights, mass spectrum, and NMR, UV, and IR spectra. The possiblein vivosignificance of this pathway of auxin formation is considered.
