In this paper, the authors describe the development of a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) current lead with the objective of achieving higher overall superconducting magnet (SCM) performance. Traditionally, copper alloy, which features high conductivity and is readily available, is used as the material for a SCM’s current lead. However, because of copper alloy’s significant heat conducting capabilities, heat leakage is a concern. The authors develop an HTS current lead, evaluate its properties, and using a current transport test without gas cooling, they determine that no problems were observed. The HTS lead is used in a magnetic field generator that is a component of a magnetic levitation vehicle (MAGLEV).
