Endogenous evoked potentials are those whose characteristics are determined by the psychological context in which a stimulus occurs, rather than by the physical parameters of the stimulus itself (Donchin et al., 1978; Hillyard et al., in press). Such potentials are produced by unexpected stimuli within a sequence of expected stimuli in any stimulus modality (Simson et al., 1977; Squires et al., 1977; Desmedt and Debecker, 1979), or by the omission of an expected stimulus (Picton et al., 1974; Simson et al., 1976; Sutton et al., 1967). For example, if a subject is asked to count a click of one intensity which occurs only infrequently during a series of clicks of another intensity, only the rare, unexpectedclick produces endogenous wave forms (Fig. 1) (Ritter et al., 1972; Squires et al., 1975; Roth et al., 1976). These potentials have been associated with sequential processing and short-term memory functions (Squires et al., 1976), and have been shown to be abnormal in various clinical populations (Goodin et al., 1978; Squires et al., 1979, Pfefferbaum et al., 1979). Thus, experimental analyses and identification of the generator sources of endogenous potentials would be of clinical importance as well as of basic neurophysiological interest.
