One of the most established schemes for the computation of flow induced sound is based on Lighthill’s analogy. Although computations with FEM for Lighthill’s wave equation give reliable results in regions far away from the aeroacoustic sources, the validity of acoustic results inside the source region is questionable as aready pointed out by Lighthill himself. This is due to the fact, that the source term formulation of Lighthill does not differentiate between flow and acoustic quantities. Moreover, effects of a background flow on the wave propagation like refraction and convection are only considered implicitly in the source term.
