D. Cohen''s mathematical model of delayed germination of seeds in a variable environment is extended to incorporate density dependence. This has a considerable impact on the optimal germination rate. The results are interpreted in terms of bet-hedging behavior. The effect of spatial dispersal is breifly considered.
