A simple method is described for growing plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum on a sub-stratum of gauze or paper supported by an inverted Petri dish in a moist chamber. Water is supplied the plasmodium by wick action of the gauze or paper from the bottom of the chamber. Pulverized rolled oats are supplied as food and daily increasingly larger amounts are added as it is utilized by the myxomycete. Excess plasmodium may be removed and used for experiments or slowly air-dried into sclerotia. Sclerotia remain viable after 10 minutes' exposure to liquid air or two weeks' exposure to 52[degree] C. The use of plasmodium is suggested for further chemical, physical, and biol. research on protoplasm. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: F. L. Howard
