In this study, two modulation methods for indirect matrix converters (IMCs) are proposed to overcome the limited input reactive power capability. These methods are first divided into two independent parts: the output voltage formation and the input reactive current formation. Afterward, the independent modulation process is combined in a way of vector merging under the same dc-link voltage segments. It is found that the proposed methods are superior to the existing indirect space vector modulations (SVM) in most situations, in the aspects of the input reactive power range. Besides, a way to simplify the modulation algorithm is presented to reduce the computational burden, which hardly affects the input reactive power range. Finally, the correctness of the modulation methods is confirmed by simulation and experimental results.
