gas company in the western hemisphere. The first edition of this text was awarded the 2007 Best Book of the Year by the International Assoc ia t ion for Management of Technology (IAMOT). Consequently, the second edition has a significant pedigree to fulfill. The text focuses on three areas: engineering management fundamentals, business management skills, and leadership essentials. The material is strong in the first section and weaker as it moves on. It is enormous in breadth and not very detailed in depth. From the quality perspective, this strategy is prone to differing interpretations. For example, Chang sees kaizen as a quality control tool rather than an improvement tool. Lean Six Sigma is presented only as a waste reduction tool. There were several broad generalizations made that I had a difficult time accepting given my experiences in the field. I assume Chang is successfully using this text for his engineering management curriculum and, indeed, it has some strengths. He provides extensive bibliographies for each chapter. The book has an e-book component that works on multiple platforms, (iPad, Kindle, smartphone, and so on) that I did not get an opportunity to explore further. I run the U.S. Navy’s largest calibration facility and manage an engineering branch that is highly skilled. However, the question I posed in taking on this review is, “Would I recommend this book as a professional development resource for my engineer ing group?” Unfortunately, this book falls short of its stated intentions and as a reference for engineering managers. As educational material, it could be valuable, but I would be inclined to recommend other materials to my professional staff.
